po wczorajszym meczu z Davydenką

12 maja 2007

R. NADAL/N. Davydenko

7:6, 6:7, 6:4

Q. How much of a physical test was that for you today?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, it was very, very tough physical test, but more mental test for me, I think.

Q. Does breaking McEnroe’s record mean anything, or is your mind completely on the final tomorrow?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, always the same, no? It’s nice to have this record, but most important thing tomorrow is the final of tomorrow for me. It’s very important to be in this final, and I going to try my best to win for the third time.

Q.
So it was almost as important to you
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, it was not the final but very, very tough match. Very difficult match for me. Every time I have break up, a lot of times he come back and break me the next game.
I serve for the match at 5 3 in the second. In the third I have 2 1, Love 30 so very tough moments for me. I was very near to lose. And I can’t be all time very tough mentally today. So it was very, very important for me.
Always the celebration like this is after final, but it was not. Tomorrow I’m going to have a very difficult match for sure, but win today is very, very important.

Q. You finished with some great shots, and suddenly you seemed to have new strength. Where did you get that from? You suddenly at the end, your strength at the end came back.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know. It was important to come back after the 2 1, Love 30 in the third. But in the total match I change a little bit tactic, no? I play a little bit more aggressive, so that’s important. I play a little bit more inside the court. It was decisive in the end of the game.

Q. You: Up, down, up, down. Davydenko: Up, down, up, down in the match. Can you explain why?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t think up down and up down, no? I just think we was more comfortable in the return, but not up, down, up, down, up, down, because 7 6, 6 7, 6 4. So all time it was very tough match. But we feel today more comfortable in the return than the serve.
I think all time we play hundred percent all the time together, no?

RAFAEL NADAL: feel with big motivation of the match tomorrow. Very important match for me. I know play the final is very, very good tournament, no?
But tomorrow going to be interesting final. Difficult against González always. He’s a very difficult player. But try to have the same like always: Try to get the rhythm of the game.
I’m a little bit tired today because the match today was very tough, but for the rest nothing. I just focus on tomorrow.

Q. How have you been feeling with your dizziness and your stomach?
RAFAEL NADAL: I’m okay. 100% okay. No problems.

Q.
Yesterday during the double you had a problem with the knee or the left leg. Do you still have problems?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no. Sometimes when I finish the match and I have to come back and play doubles it’s a little bit cold and that’s difficult, but, no, no problem. Nothing new.

Q. Was that match today your toughest match on clay since the final against Federer here last year?
RAFAEL NADAL: I play in Roland Garros against Mathieu. Roland Garros was very tough, too. Volandri may be tougher today. Yeah.

Q. Will there be an element of revenge with González because of Australia?
RAFAEL NADAL: Always never is there revenge. It’s another match, another final, important final me for sure. Very important final for him, too.
Interesting match tomorrow, but not revenge. I play the match like I’m playing other player, no?

Q.
What’s important for you to do against González, to be successful against him?
RAFAEL NADAL: The most important thing for me is just play my best tennis. If I play my best tennis I can lose, but I going to have chances.

Q. (From Italian) The first two sets you play a little bit shorter than usual and your serve was a little bit less effective than usual. Was it due to Davydenko or was it you?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, the true is I wasn’t playing my best today. It was very emotional match, very nice match for sure.
But the true is I play so much better yesterday and before yesterday. But the thing is, well, Davydenko was playing very, very great match and playing with very, very good timing all time and playing very inside the court.
It was difficult for me to get the rhythm of the game, the point, have control of the point. Those two things, no. Both things. I play a little bit worse because Davydenko play very good, and I play a little bit worse today because I play worse. (Laughter).

Q. (From Italian) Another time I saw you running faster than the ball. Do you like when people think that you are not human, that you are like not
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know, no? I just try to play my best and to run my best in every point. That’s it. I don’t think that I can run faster than the ball, that’s for sure.

Q. You don't be afraid to be pleasant of the victory on the clay? Be honest, to be disagreeable. ( In Italian)
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no? I just (in Spanish) I think that people like you if you're nice with them, doesn't depend if you win or lose.

Q. It's a job, of course.
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I know.

Q. Complimente. First set, set point you play serve and volley. Have you ever done that before in a set point?
RAFAEL NADAL: I'm thinking about Wimbledon, so... (laughter)

Q. How much has yesterday's match taken out of you physically? When you practiced this morning, how did you feel?
RAFAEL NADAL: Not very good.

Q. Not very good?
RAFAEL NADAL: No. Physically, it was fine, no problems. Better than when I was thinking yesterday today, but I was very tired a little bit. I had very tired.
I go to the court and I stop two times in the practice and I just practice -- normally I have one hour practice and today I practice fifteen minutes, twenty minutes.
So I was a little bit tired, But prepare. I was a little bit dressed, I was a little bit cold shower. After that I feel a little bit better. I arrive to the court for sure a little bit tired, no?
I was thinking I don't know how I going to feel in the match, before the match. But just trying to arrive to the court with the best chances, and I try to play with the big concentration.
My special goal today was playing a little bit more aggressive than yesterday. And if González take the control of a lot of point it's very difficult, his forehand, so I try to return the ball and be more aggressive. It was important for me, that. And he has some mistakes, which help me a lot.

Q. Did you expect a tougher match in González?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, when you go to the court in final you don't think about win 6-2, 6-2, for sure. But González, I don't know how he say after the match, but I think he go on court trying to play a lot of aggressive, no? Too much, in my opinion.
So I was playing long, so it was difficult play very aggressive. If you play long (in Spanish) Deep, if you play deep it's not easy to play very, very aggressive, and González try to play very aggressive all time.

Q. Do you think Davydenko is the most dangerous opponent for you in the clay season, even thinking about Paris, or not, or still Federer?
RAFAEL NADAL: Still everyone. Still when you go on court every match is different, no? I don't know if I play the same like I play yesterday, the same level than when I was playing Djokovic.
Maybe I going to have more chances than yesterday. So every match and every -- I say the same always, no? But that's true. I think that. Every match and every tournament and every player is different.
So you play 100 percent every day for try to win, and sometimes you find one player that, well, the game of the other player is not easy for you and someone is easier. So every match is difficult, no? It's no one match is...

Q. What do you think about Federer and Tony Roach? Federer fire Tony Roach?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't think nothing because I don't know nothing.

Q. He's not working anymore with Roach.
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, but I don't know the reason. So if I don't know the reason I can't say nothing. That's true, no? I know why. But you don't know if Tony is tired or Roger is a little bit tired. So sometimes things happen.
But Roger and Tony, I think they have very good relation so it's not a problem. Roger had unbelievable results with Tony the last three years, so I don't know the reason. I can't say nothing.

Q. All the Masters Series now are played best-of-three. Do you think that best-of-five sets will be even better for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: Right now I don't know, because I won two finals, three finals, so that's good. But I always think best-of-five I have a little bit more chances, especially on clay. Also in other places.

Q. In each tournament you beat a new record. In this tournament two records. McEnroe and then three times winner in Rome nobody has done. Which is the next record you're thinking about, if there is any record you think about?
RAFAEL NADAL: You say me something new?

Q. Yeah. Chris Evert is able to win five times in Rome. You have to look in the women now.
RAFAEL NADAL: That's in the women. No, I don't know. Just trying to continue like this. Very happy with my game the last two months. I was playing my best tennis.
I think I am in the best moment in my career, playing better than never, so very happy for that. Very, very happy.
I work very hard the last year and, well, when you work hard it's important someday feeling like this.

Q. You say, I am tired. So do you go to Hamburg?
RAFAEL NADAL: Tomorrow morning, yeah.

Q. Do you know the draw in Hamburg?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I play against (indiscernible), Benjamin Becker.

Q. Yesterday you were very happy after winning Davydenko, maybe like a final, because you know that the way of playing of González was easier for you?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no, for sure not. I lost last time against González. Well, I wasn't feeling my best physically in Australia when I play against him, but the true is he's a very good player.
I was very happy yesterday after the victory because I play a very, very nice match, very emotional match, and I was very close to lose.
In the end I was very, very happy. But I don't know if today I going to lose, so very happy to play another final here.

Q. Which recharge battery do you use to be fit one day after a three-hour match?
RAFAEL NADAL: Now I connect after one hour.

Q. Before I heard something about story about bottle, about how you arrange the bottle on the court. Are you perhaps a little bit superstitious?
RAFAEL NADAL: The true is not much, no? But I'm doing sometimes something like this. I don't know, sometimes I forget for some tournaments after I come back.
Well, I don't know, but I am working for pull out that things, so soon you going to be improving.

Q. You won three finals here. Which one in which order you will remember them? What difference any mean? Okay, five hours Coria, Federer, this one. In which ranking will you remember these three finals?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, here in Rome is one -- I play here the two finals more unbelievable, no? Two more emotional finals for me for sure, winning Roland Garros too and winning Monte-Carlo and winning Barcelona.
Every place is very important, but here I win two finals when I was losing 4-1 in the fifth set, playing more than five hours. It was in the top, top.

N. MAHUT/R. Nadal
7-5, 7-6

An interview with:
RAFAEL NADAL

RAFAEL NADAL: I need say some things. I going to speak in Spanish, but he's going to translate because I'm not prepared very good to say that.
(Speaking in Spanish.)

THE MODERATOR: One of the press agencies published some quotes from me regarding the Davis Cup, and I didn't really say what they quoted me as saying, like that it's an antiquated event, that you lose money playing it.
I said that it's a very, very special competition for me. I experience feelings playing Davis Cup that you do not experience elsewhere, that money cannot buy. Every time that I did not have any physical injury, I always played for my country and with a lot of –

RAFAEL NADAL: -- passion (smiling).
(Speaking in Spanish.)

THE MODERATOR: We need to look at the way it is played because it's a very important event, and we need to make sure that the top players are playing in Davis Cup.

RAFAEL NADAL: I say, too, I don't know the solution, but we need find.

Q. Would you like to see it played all in one week?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I say I don't know the solution. I really don't know the solution. I think a lot of times about what's the way. I don't know very well what.

Q. Do you know already if you will play next year?
RAFAEL NADAL: I always play.

Q. From first round?
RAFAEL NADAL: I always from first round. This year I was in Geneva, in Switzerland. I was practicing all week. I watching every match. I have a health problem.

THE MODERATOR: I had health problems. I was sick.

RAFAEL NADAL: For the next confrontation, the United States, I would love play there, but I have some pain in the foot. I have important injury two years ago. Sometimes for me the surface change, especially hard, is difficult and very aggressive for me, for my foot, no?

Q. A thought on tonight's match. How difficult was it for you? Why did you find it so difficult this evening?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, tough. I didn't really play very well, no? Yes, I just try my best, with the best tactic. I have little bit of chance, one breakpoint in the second set. 2-1, 2-2, he give me ace outside. After I had some more breakpoints. He serve very well. One second serve 123 miles outside advantage in the breakpoint. That's unbelievable.
But anyway, I don't play very well today, no? I am happy with my tournament. Always is difficult adapt the change in just one day. I play the quarterfinal. That's not bad tournament for me on grass. That's important for my preparation for Wimbledon, too, no? Have three matches is so much better than if I don't come here. Very happy with my tournament.
But a lot of changes, very fast changes, difficult to assimilate.

Q. Will you go home for a couple days or stay in London and practice?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I go home. I go home. I need come back to home. Is a lot of time in the last two months. I was maybe two days at home. I need disconnect, play some golf, watch a little bit end of the football league, have some fun with the friends. I need put the racquet two days very far from me.
I would love win today and play the semifinals or final here, come back to home for few days, too, no? But, anyway, I was trying my best today. It was not possible. Just the positive thing is I going to have a little bit time at home. The negative thing is I can't play the semifinals tomorrow.

Q. Do you think three matches is enough? Same as last year.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, never is enough. Best preparation is have the same like when you are normally going to the US Open. You have three, four tournaments before the US Open, or when you are going to clay, you have some weeks, too, for prepare.
All is very close on the calendar and is difficult sometimes. Adapt on grass in one week is always difficult. I just try my best. But especially if you play good on clay, especially if you play good in Roland Garros, is very difficult have a good preparation for Wimbledon, no?
But last year I have doubt. I have three matches. I go to Wimbledon on Tuesday. I have one week preparation there. I going to have the same schedule for this year, just try to practice there with my best illusion and we will see.

Q. Will you make any changes in preparation for Wimbledon? Anything you will do differently?
RAFAEL NADAL: Differently than last year?

Q. Yes.
RAFAEL NADAL: No, not much. Just have the same home, same house, one minute away from Wimbledon by walking. No, just go there to Wimbledon and practice there, practice with some people there, with the other players, have the more hours as possible on grass.

Q. Madrid play Mallorca on Sunday.
RAFAEL NADAL: Sunday.

Q. Is that difficult for you being a Real Madrid fan?
RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I am fan from Mallorca and Real Madrid both. For this time, Real Madrid is playing for the league, and Mallorca is having a very good season this year. Very happy because he save the category, he continue being the first seria, first league. That's very good news for us. On Sunday for Mallorca is a match which you don't play very often. He don't play for the UEFA, don't play to go for the second week.

THE MODERATOR: It's not like a big match. There's nothing at stake. It's not like you're going up.
RAFAEL NADAL: It's one more match for Mallorca. For Real Madrid, it's very important.

Q. Will you be sad to see Beckham leave?
RAFAEL NADAL: Beckham is for me very good professional, no? A lot of admiration for him. Unbelievable, no, one guy. He has a lot of things outside of football, outside of the sport. He is doing commercials, always the people following him if he's going to anyplace. When he go on court in matches, he run every ball, every match, fighting every match. I love that.
Going to be big lose for us. But he want to change. That's good for him, too, no? Important thing for my opinion about David Beckham is he always fighting a lot every match. But always when you look David, one guy or something go to him and ask something, he always smiling. That's very nice - and difficult (smiling).

Q. Do you know if Beckham or the other Madrid players support you in your tennis?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no? I have little bit relation with some players of Real Madrid.

Q. Which players?
RAFAEL NADAL: Raul Casillas. It's nice for me when I am playing in Madrid and they are coming to watch my matches, no? That's always very nice.

N. DJOKOVIC/R. Nadal (Montreal 11.08 )

7‑5, 6‑3

RAFAEL NADAL

Q. Did you expect him to come out so hard right off the bat?
RAFAEL NADAL: Can you repeat, please?

Q. Did you expect Djokovic to come out so hard from the first set?
RAFAEL NADAL: From the baseline?

Q. Did you expect him to be so aggressive?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I tell you yesterday, no? He was playing a very good tournament, very good season. He beat Roddick. Roddick was winning the last tournament last week, so he's coming in with good confidence. And he beat Roddick. He beat Nalbandian. So he's coming with big confidence. He played very, very good match. Very complete match, and he's unbelievable today.

Q. How was your knee today?
RAFAEL NADAL: My?

Q. Your knee?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, no problem.

Q. How did you feel about the way you played today?
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I wasn't play bad, no? I play good tennis, but maybe I have to improve a little bit more. No, I am not disappointed about my game. But I think it's the first week on hard court. Anyway, I played good week, semifinals is a good start of the American season in hard. But I know I have to improve a little bit more for the next weeks.
No, I hope, well, in the week I am coming better every day, and I hope that's continuing to Cincinnati and New York. Well, anyway, Djokovic he's a great player, and I would love to play against him another time next week. Because I hope I have ‑‑ I know I have to improve a little bit more, and he's a nice match for play.

Q. Did you feel you were moving as well as you would like to?
RAFAEL NADAL: What?

Q. Did you feel you were moving as well as you would like to?
RAFAEL NADAL: I need move a little bit better, no? Well, before coming here I have one week off, I have to stop one week for the knee. The next week I just, I tell you before, I just play with my uncle very, very slow. And I need a little bit more rhythm in the movements, no.
But I am getting slowly but, I think every day is coming a little bit better. And I have maybe a few days right now for practice for Cincinnati. And Cincinnati I hope play a few more matches, and that's going to help me a lot me.

Q. I want to ask you a question: I saw you with the Real Madrid team for the last game of the season they won. Your father used to play for Barcelona.
RAFAEL NADAL: My father?

Q. No? That's what I had read somewhere?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, not my father. Was uncle.

Q. Your uncle played for Barcelona. So, how come you're a Real Madrid fan?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, well, my uncle was in Barcelona maybe eight, nine years. While my uncle was in Barcelona, I support him. I support Barcelona. But before Barcelona, my uncle was playing in Mallorca and I am fan to Mallorca and Real Madrid. Before my uncle goes to Barcelona, I'm a fan of Real Madrid. So when my uncle finished with Barcelona, I come back to Real Madrid.

Q. You had some very tough match in the last round, how do you feel physically tonight? You feel fatigue or?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, I am fine. The truth is I need a little bit more speed in the movements for have better return the ball, especially when I am running to the forehand. But that's always I can improve always, playing and playing more matches and more practice.
So, that's it. I know that. But the important thing for me is I am feeling better hit the ball. So I feel better hit the ball every day with the forehand. If you compare the match against Mathieu and yesterday, I improve, and today I improve a little bit more so that's always important.

Q. You talked to the referee a couple of times. Do you think it's useful to talk to the referee after he's made his call?
RAFAEL NADAL: Can you repeat, please?

Q. You talked to the referee after he make his call. Do you think it's useful to do that?
RAFAEL NADAL: I don't think so (smiling). It doesn't matter, but I have to say. Because if the ball is going like this up over the net, and he's saying, Net, first serve. So I have to say because the shit machine is not working never (laughing). Always using the machine the machine every area it's having lot of mistakes, so ATP has to check that.

Q. So you got a time warning, but Djokovic takes a long time to serve, too. Do you think he should have gotten some?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, not today, no.

Q. You didn't?
RAFAEL NADAL: No, not today.

Q. I was wondering if your new doubles partner, Lleyton Hewitt, has he taught you any Aussie expressions?
RAFAEL NADAL: Not yet, no. I just played with him this week. But anyway, it was a nice experience. Disappointing we have to retire in the second round. We played very tough matches, and I had some with the elbow. I have some trouble the elbow, and he has some problem with the nail on the foot, and we have to retire.
But it was a nice experience to play one match with him. I hope in the future we can play a little bit more, but no.

Q. Are you playing doubles in Cincinnati?
RAFAEL NADAL: Maybe. Maybe, I think. I think, yes. We'll discuss it.
